The Total Building Materials Used in the United Kingdom

  Aggregates (crushed rock, igneous rock, and sandstone, for example), as well as other components such as sand and gravel, are considered to be building materials by definition. Other minerals used in construction include clay, chalk, chalk and limestone, which are not traditionally used in cement production, as well as lime, which is used to substitute for these minerals. Natural-source building materials, such as gravel, sand, clay, limestone, brick, and crushed concrete, account for 50 percent or more of the total building materials used in the United Kingdom, according to the Building Materials Institute.
